IDEA in a Day – Widening Participation Programme at Surrey Business School

In October SurreyIDEA launched one of the University’s largest ever widening participation programmes with its innovative IDEA in a Day programme. Through IDEA in a Day we’ll welcome over 500 young people aged 15-17 into the school for an interactive digital innovation workshop. Working with a range of schools, colleges and community organisations, IDEA in a Day is the starting point to building effective relationships with students who are starting on a pathway into higher education. This programme builds on the Young Person’s University which has been running for 6 years and frequently provides young people with their first engagement with university and is core to our work in getting more young people from hard to reach backgrounds into SBS and the University.

The first SurreyIDEA in a day workshop asked participants to develop marketing campaigns for various smart products (bins, dog collars, shoe soles etc.). In the end of the workshop students presented their ideas. An academic panel assessed presentation skills and insights gained throughout the workshop. The “winning team” in October gave a fantastic and engaging presentation.
